Jessica M., Bellflower

Workforce Challenge:

After being unemployed for 9 months, Jessica decided to seek training opportunities to support her work experience as a Business Administrator, Controller and Forensic Accountant. Her lack of education made her feel insecure, but she knew that she could do the job because she was not only dedicated to it, but had worked as a business professional for so many years. She heard about the Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board (SELACO WDB) from the Employment Development Department (EDD) and contacted them in hope of finding a way to earn a certificate in accounting.

Workforce Solution:

SELACO WDB funded Jessica’s 9 month Certified Bookkeeper Training at Loyola Marymount University. After completion, she started networking and searched for work online using websites like CalJOBs, Glassdoor, Indeed and Craig’s List. Working Wardrobes provided Jessica with professional clothing and she also consulted with a business mentor from SCORE to discuss becoming an entrepreneur. Jessica acknowledged that the SELACO Career Development Specialists, “Renee F. and Jodie were very supportive and encouraged me.”

Workforce Outcome:

Jessica started her own business, O’Neal & Associates, LLC in Bellflower and hired 3 part-time employees who are working from home. Her business assists small companies with their accounting and organizing needs as well as provides training so that companies can grow. Jessica stated, “I like what the company stands for. I like that what we’re trying to do is bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and the ability to succeed long term.” Jessica offered these words of advice for other job seekers; “Don’t let the world determine your destiny. If you have faith in yourself, and you have applied yourself to help others be successful, rest-assured that all of that knowledge and skills will help you achieve your own goals.”

Congratulations, Jessica
