Juan Carlos Martinez

Juan “Carlos” Martinez, Downey

Workforce Challenge:

Carlos was unemployed for 11 months after having worked 2 years in sales and marketing. Since his position was eliminated and replaced by a computer, he had little faith in finding another sales job where he would not be replaced by technology again. Carlos came to the America’s Job Center of California in Cerritos looking to meet with a representative from the Employment Development Department (EDD). He wanted to learn more about his unemployment insurance, training opportunities and job placement. That’s when he discovered the Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board (SELACO WDB).

Workforce Solution:

After enrolling with the SELACO WDB, Carlos attended the Pacific Institute’s “Steps to Economic and Personal Success” (STEPS), a 3-day seminar to help him set goals and remain positive. SELACO enrolled Carlos in the Electrician Training at Baldwin Park Adult School. While he attended school in the evening, Carlos concurrently participated in a 90-day, on-the-job training program with Efficient Lighting and Electric in Bellflower during the day. Upon completion of his OJT, Carlos was hired by the company as a Sign and Lighting Technician. After a year and a half, Carlos earned his Electrician Certificate. Unfortunately, due to the COVID19 shutdown, he was laid off from his technician job in March and was unemployed for 7 weeks while he continued his education. However, with the experience that he had already gained, Carlos was able to find a better paying job with a government contractor.

Workforce Outcome:

When Carlos announced on Social Media that he had completed his electrician training, an old friend from high school saw his post and connected him to an electrical construction company in Palmdale who hired Carlos as an electrician – on his birthday, in fact. Carlos stated, “With the help of the SELACO WDB Career Development Specialists, Jodie, Renee F. and Sara, I was able to find a good electrical school and land a job as an electrician.” He added that he likes the job duties, the salary and the hours. Carlos shared his advice; “Don’t be afraid to try new things.”
