Angelina

Workforce Challenge:

Angelina first visited SELACO WDB America’s Job Center in 2011 after learning about it from the Employment Development Department (EDD). After taking a year off from work, she returned to the center in January 2018 to begin another job search. Angelina was transitioning out of dental management to human resources. She earned her degree in 2016 in Business Administration; Management and Human Resources, but desired to gain more experience in HR.

Workforce Solution:

SELACO offered the support that Angelina was seeking. She checked the career center calendar and picked up flyers regularly to find recruitments, workshops and activities. She attended the computer classes and workshops to upgrade her computer knowledge and sharpen her job search skills. Also, she joined Job Club and participated every Friday where she found motivation, encouragement, and support from both her peers and facilitators.

Angelina searched for jobs on CalJobs, websites like IHireHR, Indeed and Career Builder as well as registering with nearly a dozen temporary agencies. She also joined and networked at the Professionals In Human Resources Association (PIHRA) events and Latino Student Business Association (LSBA) alumni events, Facebook and SELACO WDB job fairs.

Outcome & Benefits:

Because of her diligent and focused job search, Angelina found two jobs within six months. She was offered a part-time/seasonal position at Legends Hospitality, LLC working as an HR Assistant/Scheduling Coordinator at the Angels stadium from a connection that she had made with a member of the LSBA. Secondly, Angelina kept in touch with a Recruiter/Client Service Manager from @Work Personnel who let Angelina know about job openings at the Salvation Army. Angelina missed an opportunity when the company hired a temp for their open position, but after the temp’s departure, she was offered a full-time job as an HR Generalist. She now works for a non-profit, faith-based organization that helps people overcome alcohol and drug addiction. Angelina enjoys working in HR, but also likes the hours as well as the fact that she can work at both jobs because they are just five minutes away from each other and only twenty minutes from home.

Angelina advises other job seekers to sign up for all of the SELACO WDB workshops, join the Job Club and enroll in the computer classes taught by Cerritos College. She added, “Do not get discouraged, stay positive, try different search engines and network, network, network.”
