Cory

Workforce Challenge:

Cory was unemployed for 2 years after being laid off as a Community Labor Service Specialist. He searched for jobs online, seeking steady employment in the construction industry, but needed the proper training and certification. Cory had heard about SELACO WDB through the El Monte Parole office.

Workforce Solution:

SELACO WDB enrolled Cory into training with Coastline Community College and Career Expansion, Inc. He attended a 4 week intensive study, and earned certification in OSHA, HAZWOPER, Hands On – Hand/Power Tools/Construction Material Handling, CPR/First Aide/ADE, Lead/Asbestos Awareness/GHS, OSHA 7405 (Fall Protection), OSHA 7300 (Confined Space Awareness). He also attended SELACO WDB’s 3-day attitude building seminar, Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS) and earned a certificate of completion.

Outcome & Benefits:

Cory applied for an apprenticeship program with Laborers Union and completed a 1 week boot camp at the Laborers training school in Azusa. After one interview, he was hired as a First Period Apprentice Laborer at SKANSKA in Los Angeles, a company that offers a variety of construction projects. During his graduation speech, Cory admitted with deep emotion; “I didn’t think I could do this.” He advises fellow job seekers, “Stay positive, proactive, focused and be patient when seeking employment. Take advantage of opportunities, even if it is something you don’t really want to do. Use it as a stepping stone to get to where you want to be. Further your education and training and make yourself a better candidate.”
