Frank

Workforce Challenge:

Frank became unemployed in October 2013 after working as a Guest Service Agent (shuttle driver) for almost 2 years. He was a participant in the Senior Job Training Program and was directed to the nearest Workforce Center by the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA). Frank felt that his biggest challenges were his lack of follow through, his tendency to shift in different directions and getting too involved in volunteer activities. He came to the Cerritos AJCC looking for new tools and resources to help him identify a career at this point in his journey

Workforce Solution:

Frank attended the job search workshops, Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS) and particularly enjoyed Job Club where he found mutual support from his peers and guidance from the facilitators. The questions that challenged Frank’s efforts, the affirmation of others’ success stories of hope and progress kept him motivated. The new information about LinkedIn and the suggested approaches kept him learning. He searched for jobs online via CalJOBs and Indeed, but also attended networking events and volunteered. Because Frank was a passionate advocate for his nephew who had autism, a family member suggested that Frank pursue a career as a caregiver. He spent many hours researching, following up, and persevering through paperwork and phone calls. He got his name listed on the Registry for the Personal Assistant Services Council (PASC) and had business cards made which he distributed and specifically targeted nurses that he knew from church.

Outcome & Benefits:

Eventually the phone started ringing and Frank was offered a job as an In Home Support Services (IHSS) provider and now works in the cities of Long Beach and Whittier. He enjoys continuous learning and having the opportunity to become a creative problem solver. Frank advises other job seekers; “Take care of yourself holistically so you will have the energy and enthusiasm to commit and take the action to discover the career you are called for. The key is to follow through with all of the processes, be pleasantly persistent, volunteer and demonstrate your skills, talents and qualities. Network and grow relationships with family and community.”
