Workforce Challenge:

After 5 years working in a stressful job as a mailroom clerk, Jerry was laid off. Nearing retirement, Jerry was not prepared to find the right job that was the best fit for him at this point in his life.

Workforce Solution:

After finding out about SELACO WDB from the unemployment office, Jerry enrolled into the WIOA program. He attended the workshops, Job Club and Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS) to build his job search skills and regain his confidence. Jerry first searched for jobs in his previous field, but after counseling with his Career Development Specialist, he was encouraged to pursue his passion for art and music.

For months, Jerry visited a variety of music stores, art museums and galleries looking for employment opportunities. Rather than fill out endless online job applications, Jerry personally dropped off résumés and spoke to different people face-to-fac

Outcome & Benefits:

On November 9, 2017, on his birthday, Jerry received a call for an interview from the Museum of Latin American Art in the city of Long Beach, which he had visited several months prior. Jerry accepted an offer as a part-time security guard. He now enjoys being around the art community as well as having more time to paint. The curator at the MOLAA even requested to see his work.

Jerry stated, “SELACO staff helped me develop the right attitude that I needed to successfully go forth and face my challenges.”
