Workforce Challenge:

While surfing the Internet, Nand saw a flyer posted on LinkedIn for a Job Club presentation for people over 40 called, “Get Rid of Those Older Worker Jitters.” He came to SELACO WDB AJCC, enrolled and participated in the presentation.

Nand’s professional background was as a Project Manager/Engineer, however, he did not possess a Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate and was finding that employers were requesting or requiring it. He had been unemployed for 6 months and felt that his biggest challenges were his age, his last salary level and his specialization in the Online Analytical Instrumentation field.

Workforce Solution:

The SELACO WDB staff helped Michael prepare a professional résumé and coached him on how to answer difficult interview questions. SELACO WDB also funded his Project Management Professional Bootcamp training and exam at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) College of Continuing Education. Michael commented, “Getting my certificate really helped build my confidence during my interviews.” After attending the job search workshops, he discovered that most jobs (80%) are found through networking, not the Internet.

Outcome & Benefits:

Nand was contacted by several recruiting agencies through LinkedIn, one of which was an international engineering procurement and Construction Company that matched his skills, experience and specialization. Nand joined the company in mid-June and now works as a Control Systems Analyzer Engineer and manages analytical instrumentation engineering projects for refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants. He enjoys his job duties and will be traveling to different customer sites in Long Beach, El Segundo and surrounding areas.

Nand advises other job seekers with these words, “Never worry. Do all you do sincerely and leave the results to divine care. Think positive, enjoy the moment, continue networking maintain your faith and keep learning. Believe whatever happens, happens for good. There is divine purpose behind each move. Thank you SELACO AJCC, EDD staff members, job club friends and Toastmaster Club members.”
