Faafouina Alesana, Long Beach

Workforce Challenge:

Faafouina (Fofo) had been unemployed and seeking stability since her early 20’s. She faced personal challenges and made poor choices that left her lost and alone. Tired of struggling and wanting to reunite with her 2 young children, Fofo began to get back on her feet.

Workforce Solution:

While residing at LACADA in Santa Fe Springs, Fofo took big strides towards healthy living; learning how to manage stress, dealing with responsibilities and setting priorities. She enrolled herself into East LA Community College and started classes for Addictions Counseling and completed several certifications for CPR and first aid. Fofo was referred to the SELACO Workforce Development Board in Cerritos and worked closely with her Career Development Specialist (CDS) who provided career counseling, support services and resources. At SELACO WDB Fofo attended a 4-day seminar on high performance thinking entitled, Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS) that helped her set goals and break down barriers. SELACO also provided Fofo with an opportunity to develop her work skills at LACADA. After successfully completing 200 hours of paid work experience and 320 hours of on-the-job training, Fofo was immediately hired.

Workforce Results:

Fofo is currently employed full-time (with overtime) as a Monitor. Her job duties include accepting new residents into the facility, checking property, testing and clerical work. Fofo has moved back with family and is reconnecting with her children. She advises, “Never give up. Every second of your life is a chance to turn your life around. Maintain your focus, make the best out of your time and never let your guard down. Be happy.”

Congratulations!
